Setting up a business

A woman setting up a business from homeIf you're thinking of setting up your own business or working from home, you'll need to think through your idea before you get started. Below is some advice and things to think if you've got a great business idea but don't quite know where to start to get things off the ground.
Know your market
So you know what you are wanting to sell - whether it's a service or a product. The most important thing is that it should be something that people want to buy. Without a market your business will fail, so find out everything you can.
Start by thinking through who you are targeting. Is it people locally? Is it a particular groups of people - small businesses needing web-design support or mums who are looking for a baby class not currently available in the area.
Now look at your competitors - are there other people around selling similar things? What is different about what you will be doing and how will you persuade people to come to you instead of someone who is already established?

How will you reach your market?

Now you need to think about how you will market your service or product. It maybe that there are some people who are easy to reach (family and friends might be your starting point!), but as your business grows and you've been through the easy ones, how will you get through to new customers?
How will you sell? Will you be phoning people up, or visiting local traders, or advertising in magazines or online? Or all of the above! If you have a product, are your distributing direct to customers, through shops, through affiliates?

How will your business work?

Now think about what you are actually doing and what your business needs to succeed. Do you need premises of can you work from home? Do you need to invest in production to start with, and how much stock do you need to keep? What happens if your business does better or worse than expected - how will you manage the flow of work?
And staffing - is it something that you do on your own, or if you get more work will you be looking to take on staff? If so, what skills would the people need and where will you find them. Will they need training up?

Management

Whether you're a one man band, or are looking to recruit a team, management is essential - you need to take the time to look ahead, to see what is working and what isn't for your business.
There are legal requirements if you're running a company and you need to set aside time to make sure they are done properly - bookkeeping and accounting, insurance and tax all need looking at.

Money & business costs

As you are working out the prices for your products/services, you need to make sure you build in all your business costs. Think through how much time and money you will be spending on the marketing and how many deals you expect to come in for the effort, and build it into your costs.
Remember you will probably need help from an accountant at least once a year, so make sure you build in their costs too.
Remember to do a cash flow forecast, so work out how much you are spending to get the business set up and to buy stock in and calculate the costs you will have to carry until the items are sold. Can you carry those costs for long enough?
If you can, look at what you expect to happen over the next three years - and work out what you need to do to break even as well as the turnover that you hope to achieve to make a profit. If you think you will need to find some money to help get the business off the ground, how much will you need?

Your business plan

Now write it all up and call it a business plan. Make sure you start by clearly describing what you are doing and why it will appeal to others.
Whether you need funding or not, it is a good idea to take it to talk to your small business advisor locally.Business Link The national business advice service provides some great practical advice and has lots of interactive tools to help you get organised. There's also a postcode search to help you find contact details for your local Business Link. "Use it for to advice and help with business plans etc or to access a wide network of business support organisations."
